Tejon Ranch Guided Junior Deer Hunts

_D3X1431

Tejon Ranch is the crown jewel of hunting in California. Located one hour north of Los Angeles and covering 270,000 acres, Tejon Ranch is home to numerous small and big game species as well as upland game birds that will challenge the hunter’s abilities and will allow these individuals to look back into some of California’s earliest history.

This year, hunters on Tejon Ranch harvested three Rocky Mountain bull elk that exceeded the 400” (Boone & Crockett) mark.  The ranch is not only considered one of the top elk hunting destinations in the United States, but one of the best overall hunting operations as well.

Tejon Ranch works hard to achieve a balance of growing the population of the species while not exceeding the carrying capacity of the land. “We are not only managing the ranch from the standpoint of producing trophy quality animals, but also managing the game for the future sustainability of the species to be enjoyed by future generations of outdoorsmen to come”.   – Mike Campeau, Director of Hunting and Equestrian Operations

One of the ways to manage our herds and produce trophy quality animals is through our Junior Deer Hunting Program. Tejon Ranch offers a fully guided hunt at a reduced rate for junior hunters between ages 12-16 (includes one non-hunting adult). This assists the quality of the deer hunting at Tejon Ranch on two levels: Firstly, junior hunters harvest genetically undesirable buck deer, which increases the overall quality of the deer on the ranch and controls the population. Secondly, and most importantly, it offers an exceptional experience for junior hunters. For most junior hunters, this is the first time they have had the experience of a fully guided hunt. These junior hunters will have the ability to hunt with a professionally licensed guide who can share his knowledge of hunting and the outdoors in a very comfortable, low stress setting that will allow them to build memories and develop skills that will last a lifetime.

This year to date, the ranch has hosted 10 youth deer hunters and they have had a 100% success rate. This is a far more positive experience than hunting public land where they might not see game. Not to mention the quality and quantity of game they see on the ranch.

The junior deer hunt at Tejon Ranch is a two day hunt over a three day period. Day one, the hunt begins at the ranch offices where the hunter will meet his or her guide. They will then proceed to the hunting lodge where there will be a safety orientation and the sighting-in of the rifle. There will be an afternoon hunt on day one; if an animal is not harvested on the first afternoon the hunter will have the duration of day two and a brief morning hunt on the third day before the hunt will conclude. These hunts include a guide, transportation while on the ranch, lodging, meals, and general field care of the harvested game.

The junior deer hunt at Tejon Ranch offers a best-in-class experience for young hunters. It’s a real chance to connect with nature, see the ranch and disconnect from the virtual world and get outside and connect with the natural world.
