Conservation Agreement

On May 8, 2008, the Tejon Ranch Conservation and Land Use Agreement was unveiled to the world.  The agreement between Tejon Ranch Company and the nation’s largest and most respected environmental resource organizations; Audubon California, Endangered Habitats League, Natural Resources Defense Council, California’s Planning and Conservation League, and the Sierra Club, will, at its core, permanently conserve up to 90% of Tejon Ranch.

The approval of various bond measures over the years has clearly shown that California voters place a high priority on the protection of California’s natural heritage, and both the location and size of Tejon Ranch have established it as one of the most valued conservation properties in the state. The Tejon Ranch Conservation and Land Use Agreement is making that priority a reality by providing for the conservation of up to 240,000 acres of some of the most significant and ecologically important land in the state, while allowing for long-term development of just 10% of the Ranch.

The ongoing management of the 240,000 acres of conserved lands will be ongoing joint responsibility of Tejon Ranch Company and the independent Tejon Ranch Conservancy, which was created by the Agreement.  The Conservancy will work with Tejon Ranch Company to promote long–term, science–based stewardship of the land and provide for public enjoyment through educational programs and public access.  Public access continues to be a primary goal of the Agreement, and in addition to the many public access opportunities available through the Conservancy’s public access and citizen science programs, future opportunities for access include a realigned Pacific Crest Trail traveling 37 miles through the heart of the Ranch, and a new state park.
